Light

This page contains a discussion of light.

WHAT DOES LIGHT REPRESENT IN THE BIBLE?

BIBLE READING: Matthew 5:13-16
KEY BIBLE VERSE: Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. (Matthew 5:15-16)

LIGHT MAY REPRESENT OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST

Can you hide a city that is sitting on top of a hill? Its light at night can be seen for miles. If we live for Christ, we will glow like lights, showing others what Christ is like. We hide our light by (1) being quiet when we should speak, (2) going along with the crowd, (3) denying the light, (4) letting sin dim our light, (5) not explaining our light to others, or (6) ignoring the needs of others. Be a beacon of truth-don’t shut your light off from the rest of the world.

BIBLE READING: Mark 4:21-25
KEY BIBLE VERSE: Jesus asked them, “Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed to shut out the light? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine.” (Mark 4:21)

LIGHT MAY REPRESENT THE EFFECT OF OUR LIFE ON OTHERS

If a lamp doesn’t help people see, it is useless. Does your life show other people how to find God and how to live for him? If not, ask what “boxes” have extinguished your light. Complacency, resentment, stubbornness of heart, or disobedience could keep God’s light from shining through you to others.

LIGHT MAY REPRESENT GROWING IN OUR KNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST

The light of Jesus’ truth is revealed to us, not hidden. But we may not be able to see or to use all of that truth right now. Only as we put God’s teachings into practice will we understand and see more of the truth. The truth is clear, but our ability to understand is imperfect. As we obey, we will sharpen our vision and increase our understanding (see James 1:22-25).

BIBLE READING: John 1:1-18
KEY BIBLE VERSE: Life itself was in him, and this life gives light to everyone. The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. (John 1:4-5)

JESUS IS THE LIGHT

Jesus Christ is the Creator of life, and his life brings light to humanity. In his light, we see ourselves as we really are (sinners in need of a Savior). When we follow Jesus, the true light, we can avoid walking blindly and falling into sin. He lights the path ahead of us so we can see how to live. He removes the darkness of sin from our life. Have you allowed the light of Christ to shine into your life? Let Christ guide your life, and you’ll never need to stumble in darkness.

OUR LIGHT IS ONLY A REFLECTION OF CHRIST’S PRESENCE

We, like John the Baptist, are not the source of God’s light; we merely reflect that light. Jesus Christ is the true light; he helps us see our way to God and shows us how to walk along that way. But Christ has chosen to reflect his light through his followers to an unbelieving world, perhaps because unbelievers are not able to bear the full blazing glory of his light firsthand. The word witness indicates our role as reflectors of Christ’s light. We are never to present ourselves as the light to others, but are always to point them to Christ, the light.
